Though another light has left our world and has gone to join her beloved in the ethos of the universe, the glow of this remarkable woman will shine on in the hearts of all who cherished her.
Jan was a daughter to William Arthur and Margaret Macfarlane, Buffalo, NY (both predeceased) and a sister to Ronald Macfarlane, College Station, TX (predeceased) and David Macfarlane (predeceased) and his wife, Cindy, Hampton, NH. Jan was a teacher. After graduating from Buffalo State Teachers College, she followed her passion for art and instilled that passion in others. Inspiring children and opening their eyes to the wonders of creating filled her early years.
Jan was an artist. Her designs and uplifting messages brought hope and joy. She loved connecting with strangers at her craft fairs. So many were moved to tears as her creations spoke to their hearts in many meaningful ways. Jan was a partner. She married her beloved David in 1986. They enjoyed time together cross country skiing, swimming at Jake’s Lake, and star gazing from the deck. Jan was forever patient as she indulged David’s proclivity to go on his many never-following-a-straight-line adventures. Family was always at the forefront and bringing everyone together brought them great joy.
Jan was a mother to Eric Peterson (with his wife, Ann Marie), Chenango Bridge, NY and Kirsten Griffin (with her husband Gerard), Friendsville, PA . With her first husband Bob Peterson they raised their kids to enjoy nature and relish in outdoor activities. After meeting David, she welcomed Rachel Boyers (with her husband Richard), Essex Junction, VT and Sarah O’Neill (with her husband Eamonn), Innerleithen, Scotland into her life and continuously supported them as they found their way in the world.
Jan was a grandmother to her wonderful grandchildren CC, Ona, Treynor, Riley, Donovan, Talia, Maya, Ethan (predeceased), Eli, Lorcan and Cormac. She delighted in each one, encouraged their passions and never ceased to be amazed as she watched them grow into unique and fascinating young people.
Jan was a uniter. Her grandkids cherish memories of the week-long get-aways in the Adirondacks with Grandma Jan and Papa Dave. Big Shanty and Fieldwood were always full of fun outings and activities, good food and lots of time spent laughing together. She would bring out everyone’s inner child with games, songs, crafts, and fairy houses. If she yelled, “Is everybody happy?”, all would respond, “Well I should say!” in unison.
Jan was a dog lover. With David they continually delighted in the unconditional love and antics of Sparky, Houston and Maggie. Her sweet Sammy was her constant companion until her last day. Sammy kept David’s spirit alive for her as she tried to move forward after his death.
Jan was an optimist. Her positive outlook was infectious as she focused on all that is good in the world and the things that connect us to each other. She could warm a room with her compassion, laughter, and presence.
Jan was loved and will be truly missed.
A celebration of her life will be held January 7 at 24 Towpath St. Port Crane NY. Come anytime between 1:00 and 4:00 to share in our love for her. Please wear cheerful clothing. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity or the Nature Conservancy. https://preserve.nature.org/
