Born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1930 to Drury M Davis and his wife Ione, Ione grew up in Huntsville until the age of 16 when her father died and the family moved to Columbus, Ohio so that her older sister could attend Ohio State University. While a Senior in High School, Ione met a young man named John Garing in her 12th grade Physics class. It seems, John was good at physics and a capable tutor. Both Ione and John matriculated to Ohio State University, where Ione was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and completed her B.Sc. in Education in December 1951. John and Ione were married in Columbus in the “Little Red Church” in April 1952. They shared a rich and full life together for 71 years.
While John continued working on his Ph D., Ione taught Elementary students in the Columbus school system. Following the completion of his Ph.D. John and Ione settled into a house in Lexington, Massachusetts where they lived for the next 52 years and raised their children.
Ione was active in the Lexington community throughout her time in Lexington, serving as an elected member of the Lexington Town Council for over twenty years, as an advisor with the Cary Memorial Library, a delegate for the Massachusetts Democratic Society, a President of the United Methodist Women's group in Lexington and many other volunteer positions within the town. Ione was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution Society (DAR) serving a vice regent in the 1970’s and maintaining her involvement throughout her life. Ione and John’s hobbies of gardening, birdwatching and mineral collecting led to their active involvement in many local clubs.
In 2010, Ione and John moved to Kirkwood, NY where they reside with their daughter Susan.
Ione was preceded in death by her parents, Drury McNary Davis and Ione Estelle Thompson and her sister, Emily Weed. Survivors include: husband, John; son, John and wife Janice Hill; daughter, Susan and husband Bob Grajewski; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
