It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Barrie after a lengthy illness on December 23rd, 2022, at home. He was born November 21, 1936, in Kenora, Ontario where he resided until the family moved to Coquitlam in his early teens.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Ulla, and his children Lisa (Paul) Bentz, Leona Bentz, Mark (Tracy) Bentz and Michael Bentz; and his grandchildren, Connor (Dionne) McGauley, & Kimberley McGauley, MacKenzie Bentz and great granddaughter Sequoia (Coco) McGauley. Plus, his extended family in Sweden, Wailet, Brigitta (Ingemar), Kjell (Lena) and Johnny (Lena), plus sister-in-law, Dianne Bentz and Adele Turner.
Barrie graduated in 1961 from UBC Medicine with high honours receiving the Governor Generals Gold Medal Award for his achievements. He then did his internship at Detroit General Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and upon his completion, he returned to Coquitlam joining the Gain Medical Centre as a General Practitioner where he remained until his retirement in 2012.
Barrie is predeceased by his treasured brother, Brian Bentz in 2015, his mother Wilhelmina (Minnie) Bentz in 1991 and his father Ernest Hans Bentz in 1978 here in Vancouver.
Barrie’s love of reading all genres continued to the day of his passing as did his interest in art. Barrie’s absolute favourite hobby was travelling which he continued with his wife Ulla until his physical body was incapable of those rigors’ adventures, but all those interests continued in the literature he read daily and, in his thoughts, & dreams.
Dr. Bentz will be laid to rest at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Barrie’s memory to Parkinson Society British Columbia or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Society of Canada
A private family service will be held later.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialportcoquitlam.com for the Bentz family.
