William R. "Bill" Ward, 77, of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away on September 12, 2024. Born on November 2, 1946, in Leominster, Massachusetts, Bill was a cherished teacher, coach, and football referee whose enthusiasm for education and sports left a lasting impact.
Bill graduated from Leominster High School in 1964 and then earned his degree from Salem State University in 1968. He devoted many decades to teaching at Assabet Valley High School, where he also coached high school softball and football. Bill was also a well known and respected football official and over the years held roles at both the collegiate and professional level. His dedication and excellence in officiating were recognized through the George L. Shiebler Award from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), an honor given annually to an official who has shown exceptional commitment to their profession.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a passionate golfer and an active member of his community. He was a long-time member of Monoosnock Country Club in Leominster, and in retirement in Punta Gorda, Florida, he continued to enjoy the game with his many friends. Bill was also an avid fan of Boston sports teams and enjoyed rooting for the Patriots and the Red Sox. He could often be found at Harpoon Harry’s, where his vibrant personality and love for live music, especially a local reggae band, made him the life of the party. And most importantly he was a kind, supportive and loving father who had an unmatched ability to make us laugh. His sense of humor brought joy and light to our lives, no matter the situation.
Bill is survived by his son, Gregory Ward; daughter, Alissa Ward; and brother, Richard Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Ward.
Bill’s warmth, infectious enthusiasm, and ability to make friends wherever he went will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
