Olivia Wellings, a lifelong resident of Groves, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024, at the age of 80. She was the beloved wife of Billy Wellings, the devoted mother of Alta Wellings, loving grandmother to Hostin May and Sage Elmore, and a cherished friend to all who knew her.
Born on September 25, 1944, Olivia was a graduate of Bishop Byrne High School, where she met two of her closest lifelong friends, Linda and Janice. During her school years, Olivia was a proud member of the Colleens, an organization that exemplified her spirit of camaraderie and service to others.
On February 14, 1969, Olivia married the love of her life, Billy Wellings. Together, they raised their daughter Alta, who became the heart of Olivia's world, only to be topped by the birth of her two Grandsons, Hostin and Sage.
Olivia's love of nature, beauty, and creativity shone brightly in every aspect of her life. She was an avid gardener with a passion for flowers, earning a certification from Lamar University. Her talent for floral design and decor was unmatched, and she dedicated much of her time to making her community beautiful. As the founder and president of the Groves Beautification Community, Olivia ensured that her beloved city remained pristine. She was known for her attention to detail, ensuring that corners, underpasses, and public spaces were kept tidy. City employees often joked that they could set their clocks by Olivia’s calls reminding them it was time to mow.
Olivia’s commitment to her city extended beyond landscaping. She served on the board of the Senior Citizen Hall, where she was known for her festive decorations during the holidays, and she was a proud ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce. Olivia was also a dedicated board member of the Friends of the Library, and her efforts were recognized when she was named Woman of the Year for Mid County, honored with a special dinner in her name. Most recently, Olivia was celebrated as Citizen of the Year for Groves, an honor she received with humility and grace. As Marshal of the city’s parade, Olivia was celebrated not only for her contributions to Groves' beauty but for her enduring dedication to its growth and well-being.
Olivia lovingly maintained the grounds at the Catholic Church, Groves Library, the Senior Citizen Center, and Celebration Park. Her care for these spaces reflected her deep faith and commitment to service.
Olivia’s legacy will live on in the flowers she planted, the community she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched. Her family, friends, and the people of Groves will miss her dearly, but they take comfort knowing that her love for her city and her family will continue to inspire for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers family has requested a donation be made to the Groves Beautification Committee.
