John “Buddy” Oliver, 83, of Groves, Texas passed away on Thursday June 22, 2023 at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born August 25,1939 to John and Mary Oliver and grew up in Port Acres, Texas along with his siblings. Buddy served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He married the love of his life Delores “Dodie” Johnson on August 1, 1964. They had two children Dana and Cody and built a life of love around them. Buddy was a hard worker and worked at Burton shipyard for many years and eventually retired from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital maintenance department. He cherished life, never met a stranger, and always helped a friend in need. Buddy enjoyed making lifelong friends, making country music, and making laps around the yard on his riding lawn mower.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dodie Oliver of Groves; his daughter, Dana Wagenhauser and husband, Kenneth of Austin; his son Cody Oliver and wife, Cheri of Bridge City and his grandsons Garrett and Colton Oliver; along with siblings Anna Dean Golmon, Terry Leon Oliver, and Janis Marie Hollis; and a very special cousin Henry Delino and wife, Peggy and a host of extended family.
Visitation will be at 10:00 AM, Monday June 26, 2023, at Grammier - Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur, Texas. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Compassion Hospice and caregivers Veronica, Janie, Wanda and Annie for their care and support in making it possible to keep Buddy in the comfort of his home.
For anyone who would like to raise a beer in Buddy's honor, the Boudain Hut, Buddy's home away from home, has graciously agreed to open at 2pm Monday. A fitting tribute to a man we all loved.
