Joan taught school and Sunday school at Trinity Lutheran and was active in Trinity’s Ladies Groups, choir and Mid-Week School. She enjoyed volunteering at the church’s Thrift Shop and participating in Tender Loving Care and Fun Bunch Senior’s Group. She was also an after school Director of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, A.J. Canton; parents, Pastor Fredrick Harms and Adeline Blair Harms; one brother, Theodore Harms and three grandsons, Matthew and Aaron Canton and Jeffrey Naggs.
Survivors include four sons, Tony Canton of London, England, Tom Canton and his wife, Vera of Beaumont, TX, Tim Canton and his wife, Jennifer of Conroe, TX, and Todd Canton and his wife, Tammy of LaBelle, TX. Grandchildren, Adam Canton, Jamie Hudson and her husband, Cody, Anthony Canton, Pauline Tran and Lacey Naggs; two great-grandchildren, Kane and Jaleigh Richard; three brothers, Dave Harms and his wife, Molisa of Wentzville, MO, Bob Harms of Jacksonville, Fla., Dan Harms and his wife, Barbara of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Marla McVey and her husband, Jerry and Rachel Moore and her husband, Joe all from St. Louis, MO; three sisters-in-law, Florence Polite of Austin, TX, Dorothy Haws of Conroe, TX, and Mary Helen Linscomb and her husband, Larry of Buna, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to United Board of Missions, Trinity Lutheran Church Choir and Youth Group or personal choice.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, November 2, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. Funeral services for Joan Canton will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Arthur, with Pastor Tim Dinger officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
