Mr Raymond Joseph Hentges

Raymond is predeceased by his parents John P. and Mary Jane Hentges and his brother John.

Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elaine; daughters: Mary (Dave)Gatenby, Kathy (Kevin) Berard; sons: Allan (Amanda) and John (Cheryl); brothers: Ern (Glady) and Larry (Anne); grandchildren: Chelsey (Josh) Macklem, Jennifer Gatenby, Briana and Katlin Berard and Mikayla and Mitchell Hentges as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray came to Port Alberni in 1955 where he worked driving truck during the construction of the Pulp Mill. Ray then moved to McBride for 2 years where his eldest daughter Mary was born. The family then packed up and moved to Whitehorse, Yukon where his second daughter Kathy was born. Two years later, they again packed up and moved back to Port Alberni where his two sons Allan and John were born. He worked in highway construction up Island until 1976 when he was hired on with the City of Port Alberni where he worked for the next 24 years before retiring in 2000.

Ray will always be remembered for his sense of humour, smile and blue eyes and was always willing to lend a hand to family or friends to help fix vehicles or whatever else needed fixing. He was also known for his wine making and his liqueurs. When Ray retired, he and Elaine started camping with the Happy Wanderers Trailer Club and he started making tinmen and card holder blocks where, before long, through word of mouth, they started selling at the campsites Ray and Elaine were at. Ray always looked forward to his week long camping trips and his month stay at the Lighthouse campground. He even had to get a big TV for his trailer so he could faithfully watch his Blue Jays

Ray will be sadly missed by family and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am, Friday, September 14, 2012 from Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, 4731 Burke St with Father Stephen Paine officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon Division, Port Alberni Unit, 3030B Third Ave, Port Alberni., V9Y 2A5
