She was born in Biggar Ridge, NB to Gertrude and Alexander Hawkes. She was the 10th of 12 children.
In June 1950, at the home of her parents in East Florenceville, NB, she married the love of her life, Rodney. In February 1951, she moved to Port Alberni where she lived until the end. As a young woman she was active at Elim Tabernacle, she taught Sunday School, sang soprano in the Church choir, occasionally singing solos, was part of the Dorcas Ladies group and started a group for girls which later became Missionettes. No one had an excuse to spend a holiday by themselves as she would invite them to spend the holiday with her family, where the food was abundant and the love unconditional.
She was a great seamstress. In the early years in Port Alberni, she made her own clothes, clothes for her children and occasionally for friends. In retirement, her quilts won many prizes at the fall fair. She also knit sweaters, mittens and slippers for her children and grandchildren.
She liked to travel and camp. First in a tent and later in a travel trailer. They travelled across Canada several times, to Alaska once and visited Tuktoyaktuk, the most northerly inhabited point in Canada. In the fall, she would go moose hunting with her husband and at one point she even owned her own rifle and had her own hunting license.
She is sadly missed by Rodney, her husband of 69 years, her children Faye Lackey (David) of Texas, Harvey Rogers (Marg) of Port Alberni and Lois Katzuk of Bowser, 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, brother Lawrence Hawkes of Qualicum Beach and sister Viola Milton of NB and numerous nieces and nephews.
