James was born and raised in Port Alberni. After graduating from ADSS he went to trade school for plumbing and worked for Somass and APD as a pipe-fitter. He was last employed at Harmac in Nanaimo. Fishing was his main hobby for the last few years and he spent many hours on the Inlet. He loved his Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquaro which he rode as much as he could and rode in the Port Alberni Toy Run for a number of years. He loved spending time with his children, experiencing outdoor activities like camping, BBQing in the backyard and riding quads and dirtbikes. He spent every weekend with his kids. He was always there for his many friends to lend a hand when asked to help fix things. He was an active member of NA for 2 years and proudly ran the Saturday meetings.
