When I was a kid, my right ankle got sliced open,  and the blood poured out profusely that to this day,  I still feel that memory and shiver.  Everybody  around froze or did not pay attention, except Irene.   She immediately bandaged my ankle  and comforted me. Everyday after that, she dutifully boiled guava leaves and  cleansed the wound with the water to prevent infection.   The wound healed and the  big scar in my right ankle has always reminded me of Irene -  my most empathic, most compassionate, and most generous sister.   With her caring and tending to my wound,  Irene instilled empathy and compassion in my young,  growing mind.   For that virtue lesson in action,  I am forever grateful to Irene.

   Yes, Irene had quirks, like all of us.  Her emotions and temper were sometimes untrammeled.  She wanted to  level up the oppressed and the underdog, possibly feeling left out herself, having grown up in a family of 13 kids.    Her very open heart made a lot of friends and supported some relatives financially.  Some people took advantage  of her open heart, and this did not favor her sense of self in the world.  Sometimes she stepped hard on people with hurtful words.  Her fervent loyalty to those she deemed oppressed   prevented her from seeing the story on all sides.  Regardless,  she would make up for  her outbursts with generosity to others,  again and again.   It can be said that she lived to give what she's got.   This is how we will remember Irene - a compassionate,  generous human being to anyone who is in need or oppressed.  May she rest in peace.

  We grieve that Irene's gone but we know she's happy in heaven now, with our parents and our departed siblings.  This is our comfort and consolation.  To those who were touched by her life,  we ask that we remember all her good deeds and compassionate heart.

Eternal rest grant unto Irene O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.  May she rest Peace.  Amen.
