It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Dorothy (Dot) Anne Hemmingsen, she left us peacefully surrounded by family on November 10th at the age of 91.
Dorothy was predeceased by the love of her life husband Brian Hemmingsen in September 1993, parents Carl and Mary Carlson, brothers Don and Glen and great granddaughter Mercer.
Dot is survived by four sons, Les (Cynthia) of Grande Prairie, Randy (Helena) of Red Deer, Larry (Sandra) of Port Alberni and Bruce of Red Deer; eight grandchildren Leif, Alix (Chris), Jillian, Trevor (Melanie), Lanaia (Dan), Sarah (Adam), Eric (Jemma), Cody (Heather) and five great grandchildren Peyton, Fallon, Berkley, Oliver and Crimson. She also leaves behind daughter-in-law Ann, sisters-in-law Margaret, Rita and Elin and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was born on May 1, 1930, in Port Alberni and spent most of her life here, she was beautiful both inside and out and lived a simple peaceful healthy lifestyle and loved having family around. Dot was a lifelong learner always wanting to discover new things, she was an avid reader, gardener, knitter, potter, birdwatcher, lover of the outdoors and cats of course, took up the challenge of a good crossword and put together many a puzzle, sunshine club member, royal watcher, amateur photographer, dragon boater, swimmer, badminton player, square dancer, creative writer, took up Spanish and French, enjoyed a good British mystery show, and was a little bit competitive while watching her favorite show Jeopardy! She had the travel bug and was fortunate to see many beautiful places around the world from Sweden and Denmark to Australia and New Zealand to South Africa and all things Canada to name a few. Dot’s faith was an integral part of her life always, Sundays were always a big deal and although a very quiet soul she so enjoyed Jericho Road and the fellowship that came with it.
Thank you to Dr. Van Der Merwe, Port Alberni Home Support Services, Echo Village staff and residents, special thanks to Wendy you made such a big difference and to Norma and Jean thanks for being such amazing friends for so many years Dot loved having you both in her life.
Cremation has taken place and a family celebration of life will take place next summer, in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to a cause close to Dot’s heart the Port Alberni SPCA.
And the perfect signoff… Afterglow “I would like the memory of me to be a happy one. I would like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I would like to leave an echo whispered softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I would like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when my life done.”
