Mrs. Applewhite was born February 13, 1933 in Durant Mississippi to Herbert Herrington and Elizabeth Lassetter Herrington. She was a graduate of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Jackson. Bettye was a registered nurse by training and co-owner of Apple’s Ltd. in Poplarville. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Poplarville and a member of the Mississippi Junior College Board. Bettye was an active member of Poplarville Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Blueberry Jubilee Council where she began the Baby Crawl as Chairwoman and the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast at Pearl River Drug. Because of her many civic contributions, including the Crepe Myrtles lining Main Street, Bettye was a recipient of the “Citizen of the Year” award given by the Poplarville Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to her parents, Bettye is preceded in death by her sister, Jane Herrington Bailey.
Family members include her husband of 65 years, Robert W. “Bob” Applewhite Sr.; two children Pamela (Kirk) LaHaye, Robert W. “Woody” Applewhite Jr.; two grandchildren, Natalie Elizabeth LaHaye, Nicholas (Aimee) LaHaye; and one great grandson, Lucas James LaHaye.
Memorial services will be at First Baptist Church, Poplarville on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with Memorial Service following at 1:00 pm. The Applewhite’s will welcome friends and family after the service at their home for an open house until 4 PM.
