He was born on December 2, 1937 in Mt. Vernon, NY to William and Louise (Morrow) Manes.
He attended Texas Christian University and played on the tennis team. He later transferred to The University of Tampa and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1959-1965. Upon graduation from college, he took a management position with the JCPenney Co. in Pensacola, FL. It’s there where he met his wife, Betty, and they married on July 26, 1962. His career took them to different cities all over Florida and they ended up in Pompano Beach in 1973 and never left. In 1979, he started a retail linen chain, Teri’s Bath, where he and Betty worked side by side for 13 years.
If you knew Roger, it didn’t take long to figure out he had a lifelong passion for offshore fishing. He loved to hear and share stories about the day’s catch and the tackle used to land them. He enjoyed tinkering in his “fish room” creating his own custom lures and sharing his knowledge so others could land the big one! He was never more excited than when he was catching a big wahoo or yelling “fish on”! He fished on a lot of nice boats but his 1974 Chris Craft, “Salty”, always had his heart.
His business savvy was remarkable. People were important to him and he had a knack for getting the best out of them. His influence and impact made a positive difference in many lives.
He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Ft. Lauderdale for over 25 years.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty; his children, Shannon (Mike) Horsley, Lake Winnebago, MO; Roger Manes, Jr., Pompano Beach, FL; and Ambassador Jean Manes (Hector Cerpa), Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL; brother, Bill Manes, Clermont, FL; sister-in-law, Ruth Shaylor, Pensacola, FL; grandchildren, Devyn Horsley, Cameron Horsley, Constanza Cerpa, Candela Cerpa, Jaden Aldrich, a niece, and several nephews.
Roger loved God, his church, his family, and friends. He made us all enjoy this life more, and he will be greatly missed!
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Ft. Lauderdale, 301 E. Broward Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301.
