Anne Lawson Hoover was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Paul and Helen (nee Sheridan) Lawson. With the Great Depression occurring early in her life, the family lived with various family members and in several cities but eventually settled in New Kensington, PA, near Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Mary Washington College, the women’s college associated with the University of Virginia, with a major in Medical Technology.
She had met William Hoover, Jr. when he and fraternity brothers visited her best friend’s family on weekends away from Allegheny College. She and Bill liked to relate the story of how after moving to Pittsburgh for work in a local hospital, she took the initiative to call him, saying she was calling all the friends she knew in Pittsburgh. He then asked who else she had called....and she was found out for only calling him. Their courtship was quick, marrying in 1949 after dating for less than a year. They had 2 children, William W. Hoover, III in 1951 and Cynthia J. Hoover in 1953.
She spent the next 15 years as a full time mother but also was active in PTA, serving as President for many years and working hard to ensure excellent education in the Chartiers Valley school system in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. After her children were in junior high, she returned to work in medical technology, enjoying the combination of working directly with patients as well as running the tests, connecting her love of people with intellectual and technological inquisitiveness. After successfully seeing her children finish their higher education, her son as an electrical engineer and computer innovator and her daughter as a physician and pediatrician, she and Bill moved in 1983 to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to enjoy retirement.
After 10 years together enjoying FL life, she lost the love of her life in 1994. Not one to just sit around the house, she started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and as with all she did, she pursued this volunteer work with great passion and energy. She decided to get a computer and taught herself and became proficient in its use and continued to expand her use of evolving new technology. She travelled extensively during this time, visiting Africa twice, Australia and New Zealand twice, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria, as well as making multiple visits to Oaxaca, Mexico where her daughter was a missionary. She loved exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and was willing to visit remote and unusual places within these countries. These travels were shared primarily with her Aunt, Sally Sellers, and her daughter. She was an avid reader and maintained her intellectual inquisitiveness to the end. She taught herself how to be successful in investing, working closely with her best friend and accountant, Kenneth Gonyo, who over the past 20 years managed to enjoy a return on investment of their portfolio of 18%. She continued investing till 2 weeks before her death, only then deciding it was time to take the profits and liquidate her accounts.
She suffered a stroke in 2009 and after successful recuperation chose to move to Senior Independent Living at 5 Star Premier Residence on the ocean in Pompano Beach. Again not one to just sit back and watch life, she actively participated in the life of Community Church in Lauderdale by the Sea and became involved with the Residents’ Board, serving as President for 3 years. She vigorously worked with “the holiday fund”, the collection to provide monetary thanks to the whole staff of those who so lovingly served the residents.
She suffered a short illness and passed away peacefully with her children and daughter-in-law at her side. She will be dearly missed and remembered by those who survive her: son William W. Hoover, III, daughter Cynthia J. Hoover, daughter-in-law Dorothy Lucas Hoover, granddaughter Jennifer Hoover, grandson David Hoover (Deven), 2 great grandsons, Isaac and Ethan Hoover, and nieces Sandra Burger and Elizabeth Jones.
Time and location of a Celebration of Life remain to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity or Trustbridge Hospice are suggested.
Peace to her memory.
