Dr. John J. Wiorkowski PhD, age 80 of Corinth, Texas passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
JOHN J. WIORKOWSKI, retired Vice Provost, Professor Emeritus School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas, was born September 30, 1943, to Harriet and John Stanley Wiorkowski in Chicago Illinois. He passed away at his home in Corinth, Texas on February 6, 2024.
He is survived by his beloved wife Wanda (Wandie) the one whose life was daily filled with the John sunshine; his unconditionally loved son Dr. Winter Wiorkowski of whom he was so proud.; his loved brother Alan, wife Ann, and their children; his beloved sister Janice Wiorkowski Ziroli, her husband Steve Ziroli and their children; stepsons Walter, wife Lisa, step-grandchildren Zoe and Jacob whose university progression always interested him; Brian, wife Melissa, and step-granddaughter much loved Alexa whose growth to a teenager has been his delight. He received a Bachelor's, Master's with a culmination of PhD degree in Statistics 1972. Another source of pride is his Polish heritage. Wiorkowski “-the son of the woodchips man”
“I would like to be a scholar in everything I do. A scholar is never finished. He is always seeking and I am always seeking” Ahmad Jamel. This was John, always curious and wanting to learn something new of the world around him. He remembered everything he read and could speak on subjects from his loved statistics, classical, Vangelis new wave and folk music of the 60’s opera, art, history, politics and beyond. The more complicated the score in music the better he liked it, always listening for when each instrument would come in. He was a gem cutter of great skill. He kept fit by swimming laps an hour a day and playing squash. Dr. W had a tremendous love and knowledge of wines!
He was the kindest, most caring, generous of men. Dr W. always remembered old friends with emails and gifts every Christmas. He touched thousands of students over the years and many grad students would request him for stat because of his teaching skills with jokes interspersed and making what he taught germain to their everyday lives. He loved helping students, deans faculty , staff and did so every day. How does one encapsulate 80 years of an exceptional man’s life in such a short space? Those who love him, if they look for it, will feel his presence even though he is not physically here. John you are brightening where you are now as you did on this earth. We love you, we miss your physical presence and we will see you soon.
The family will receive friends for a gathering on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 11 AM - 12 PM at Ted Dickey Funeral Home, 2128 18th St Plano, Texas 75074. A Funeral Service will begin at 12 PM and burial will ensue at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
