Dorothy M. Johnston died Wednesday, May 1st, 2013 at Medical Center Plano after a brief illness. She was born on August 28, 1920 in New Hope, Texas, the daughter of Beulah Allen Mitchell and Walter Andrew Mitchell, early pioneers of Collin County, who came to Texas by covered wagon. Dorothy married the love of her life, Robert Lloyd Johnston, November 3rd, 1951. During World War II she was a civilian employee working as a draftsman at Camp Wolters, near Mineral Well, Texas. Later, she was employed as a drafting supervisor by Schafer Engineering, a consulting petroleum engineering company in Dallas, Texas. A graduate of Plano High School, she lived in the historic “Mitchell House” built in 1891, which is built in the shape of a cross with two identical porches on the east and west sides, surrounded by cotton fields and a beautiful view of Spring Creek. The Mitchell House well flowed with spring water that many early Plano residents drank from and enjoyed the east sun porch or west sun porch depending on the time of day.
Known for historical preservation, Dorothy recently received a Living Legacy Award by The Collin County Historical Commission at their annual ceremony to recognize outstanding achievement in historical preservation and education. She received this award at The First Christian Church of Allen; coincidentally, where she and her three brothers were baptized.
She is survived by her beloved sister Peggy Jane Mitchell and preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Beulah Mitchell, her husband, Robert L. Johnston, and her brothers, Vernon Andrew Mitchell, Ray Allen Mitchell, Walter B Mitchell. Arrangements are being handled by Ted Dickey Funeral Home.
