Mr. Henry Panming Cheng was born in 1924, circa the time of Sino-Japanese war at the prelude to the Second World War. Post WWII, he graduated from Police Academy and temporarily worked as a policy officer in Shanghai. He retreated with the Nationalist government to Taiwan nearly as the very last of the exodus. He met Alice Lin in Taiwan, who later became Mrs. Cheng; started a family at a time of extreme hardship. He sought an opportunity to emigrate to the US amidst political persecution and a chance to build a better life. He embarked on Haiming in 1964, and eventually graduated with an MS degree from Michigan State University in 1968. He moved to NYC with Alice and started his longest life journey building the family. He remained in the greater NY area until his passing.
Mr. Cheng has had a life-long commitment to law enforcement, community services and political responsibility throughout his days on earth, having contributed to the police academy as a professor, police officer, organized the first Chinese auxiliary police in NYC, and built the greater Flushing area with community and business leaders. He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Anthony and Camilla, Edward and Joyce, Sandy and Mark, Betty and Howard as well as six grandchildren, and four great-grand sons.
