Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mitzie (Daugherty) Lindner; his parents, Annie (Scott) and John Lindner; his siblings Margaret (George) Kruhm, Jean (Frank) Bishop, Anna (Dave) Truax, Andrew (Audrey) Lindner; and his sister-in-law Kay (Daugherty) Schmidt. He is survived by his younger brother-in-law and best buddy, Al Schmidt.
He grew up in the North Side and attended Oliver High School. He served in the US Navy, where he was a Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Missouri and received the WWII Victory Medal. He began work as a Teamster truck driver. He had a route with Sweet Clean and completed his career as an equipment driver with the Pitt Panthers. He also drove fire trucks for the Peebles VFD Station 188, where he was a longtime member and served as Chief. He volunteered with many local charities, especially the North Hills Food Bank, where he was a co-founder and active volunteer for more than 25 years.
Bill lived a life of service to his country and his community. He traveled the world and made friends wherever he went. He liked to bowl, hunt, throw bean bags, play 500, and raise a glass or two. His absence will be felt in many places and in many hearts, especially among his nieces and nephews, including Robert (Kathy) Schmidt, Beth Schmidt, Patty (Matt) Raymond, Norbert (Kathy) Lindner, Andy (Peggy) Lindner, Jim (Georgia) Kruhm, Karen (Greg) Stevans, Jim (Luria) Lindner, Susan (Mike) Wilson, Julia (Lewis) Klupac, Winnie and the late William Kruhm, and a long list of grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Sunday, February 5, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. and Monday, February 6, 2023 from 10-11:30 a.m. at H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Perry Highway. A funeral service will be held at Noon in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Perrysville, 920 Perry Highway. Interment with military honors to follow at Allegheny County Memorial Park. To honor Bill, monetary donations to the North Hills Food Bank (northhillsfoodbank.org) are suggested.
