Anderson, SC - The Reverend Mr. Samuel Colie Hughes, 90, loving husband of the late Melva Lee Hughes, of Anderson, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022 at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans' Nursing Home in Anderson.
Mr. Hughes was born in Pickens County on June 21, 1932 to the late Sam and Emma Dodson Hughes. He attended Pickens County Schools before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Following his service in the Army, Mr. Hughes attended woodworking school where he began his career as a Carpenter. In the late 1950's, he felt the call on his life to preach the Gospel and later became an ordained Bishop in the Church of God. During his ministry, Mr. Hughes served many churches throughout South Carolina, but was best known for his pastorate at the Dentsville Church of God (now International Praise Church of God) where he built the first church sanctuary. As pastor, on Sunday mornings, Mr. Hughes would drive his 1971 Plymouth Fury to Fort Jackson where he would bring soldiers to hear the Word of God. He loved his family, gardening, and his numerous church families. Mr. Hughes was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and had the honor of participating in all of his siblings' funerals.
