Tony H. Montaño, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 14,
2023, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 69 years,
Vicenta V. Montaño and daughters Anna Montaño, Lucinda Montaño Rave and
Laura Montaño Ferguson and her husband Theodore; three grandchildren,
Stephen Rave, Aaron Rave and Ashley Ferguson; a brother, John Montaño and
his wife Barbara, and a sister, Rita Romero and her husband Ruben. He is
preceded in death by his son Mario Montaño, parents Antonio and Aurora
Montaño, brothers, Gilbert, Ramon and Manuel and sisters, Maria, Adelina
"Lina," Aurora "Vicky," and Juanita "Chana."
Tony had a successful boxing career in the early 1950s and 60s. In
1967, he was a three-division champion and held the Arizona State Title as a
middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight at the same time. He
fought four former world champions and fought for the WBA junior
middleweight crown in 1964. In 2001, he was inducted into the Arizona Hall
of Fame. His overall record stands as 49-31-3, 18 KOs. He later retired as a
Teamster. Tony will be remembered as a beloved husband, father,
grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Services will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023, beginning at 10:00
am at the Capilla de Guadalupe Catholic Church, 6733 N. 55th Avenue,
Glendale, AZ 85301. A burial will follow at 11:30 am at West Resthaven,
6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85301.
