When Ruth was a young woman, she attended the 1958 World Expo in Brussels, Belgium, where she met Frank Myron Henry, a handsome U.S. Army soldier stationed in Fulda, Germany. The two began a short courtship before Frank’s service concluded and he moved home to Arizona. Frank asked Ruth to come to the United States, and they married on June 30, 1959. Ruth’s mother was particularly upset as they had not even met Frank yet! Eventually, they did meet Frank. The couple and the children traveled to Germany several times to visit her family.
Frank and Ruth settled in Glendale, Arizona where they raised their three children, Christopher, Eileen, and Susan. Frank was an architect and Ruth worked in the banking industry.
Ruth grew to love the desert and was an avid hiker. Ruth and Frank hiked the Grand Canyon more than a dozen times, as well as many other canyons and trails in Arizona and the Southwest. Ruth also enjoyed swimming and bicycling.
Ruth and Frank enjoyed traveling and traveled to Germany, Spain, Italy, Hawaii and extensively throughout the Southwest.
On December 15th, 1995, Ruth became a proud citizen of the United States.
Ruth enjoyed baking and cooking and shared many traditional German dishes with her family.
Ruth enjoyed macrame, crocheting, knitting and planting flowers. Ruth was an avid reader and a frequent contributor to discussions involving world history, current events and politics. Ruth also enjoyed the arts, particularly opera, the symphony and theatre.
Upon retirement, Ruth and Frank moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Ruth became a tour guide, specializing in tours with German citizens in Arizona and the Southwest.
Ruth also enjoyed volunteering. She volunteered with the Scottsdale Center of the Arts, the Crisis Nursery, and Duet, among others. Ruth had an interest and appreciation for Native American Culture and volunteered for many years at the Pueblo Grande Museum & Archaeological Park in Phoenix.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, and her brother, Peter. She is survived by her children, Chris Henry, Eileen Henry, and Susan Henry, her sister Hanna, and her beloved cat, Mietzi. She also has several cousins, nieces and nephews in Germany.
The family is forever grateful to Maria Molina and Angel Miller, for the loving care they provided Ruth so that she could remain in her home during her final years.
