It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Richard Lloyd "Dick" Carr, affectionately known as "Papa," on February 5, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. Dick was born on November 9, 1937, in Valentine, Nebraska to Gerald Rodney ("Jay") Carr and Winifred Gene Harse.
Dick's family lived on the Antelope Ranch in Todd County, South Dakota, until 1944, when his parents purchased a ranch in Mellette County near White River, South Dakota. He lettered in football and basketball and proudly played on the 1955 State Champion basketball team before graduating in 1956.
Dick continued his education at South Dakota State University, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1960. As he would often say, the most intelligent decision he ever made was when he asked Mary Sharon Tyler to be his wife. Dick and Mary were married on December 20, 1959, and started a family on the Antelope Ranch. The family lived in Pierre, South Dakota, before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1977.
He distinguished his professional life as a civil engineer through his innovative projects and unwavering commitment to excellence. An avid golfer, he found solace and excitement on the greens, embracing every moment of play with the same focus and vigor he applied to his work.
He was committed to helping those less fortunate by volunteering to install a water pump for the Village of Les Esperanza, Mexico, and another trip to Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, to construct a clinic.
A cowboy at heart, Dick's spirit of adventure and freedom was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he spoke about his beloved pastimes to how he cherished his family. He was a proud and loving grandfather who often put people to sleep when boasting about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dick's life was a testament to his values: the values he held dear: family, integrity, and the simple joy of being together. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Sharon Carr; daughter, Tori Lynn Martori; son, John Lloyd Carr; son-in-law, Joseph "Ritchie" Martori; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Marie Peet Carr; sister, Carolyn Ann Reed; grandchildren, Dr. Joanna Mary Martori, Ritchie Tyler Martori, John Peter Martori, Matthew Joseph Carr Martori, and Tyler John Carr; granddaughter-in-law, Alysia Monique Krammer Martori, RN; great-grandchildren Ava Poppy Martori and Margot Wren Martori. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Rodney "Jay" Carr and Winifred Gene "Winnie" Harse Carr; brother, James Frederick. "Jim" Carr; daughter, Tami Sue Carr; and grandson, James Richard "Jimmy" Carr.
In place of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley, a testament to Dick's compassionate spirit and desire to support those in their time of need. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we hold tight to the lessons he imparted and the joy he brought into our lives, knowing that his legacy will forever be a beacon of light and inspiration.
