Leonard “Len” Baylor Wood Sr. of Prescott, Arizona; entered heaven on December 20, 2021 at the age of 89 and was reunited with his loving wife of 65 years. He was born on January 13, 1932 in Arlington, Arizona to Percy and Gussie Wood. His family was one of the original settlers in the Buckeye area. His duty to his family was of the upmost importance to him, even as a young man; he worked to help care for his many siblings. He worked as a surveyor; proudly recalling how he was the surveyor for the first runways of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. He entered the U.S. Navy to serve in the Korean War; proudly serving as a Gunners Mate on the U.S.S. Hawkins until his Honorable discharge July 28, 1954 after four years of service. He intended to reenlist, but met the love of his life Carol Wood and the two were married for almost sixty-five years before she preceded him in death in March of 2020.
Len worked throughout the rest of his career as a surveyor until Macular Degeneration forced him to retire. He and Carol retired to Prescott Valley as they had raised their children who survive him; son Leonard Junior and daughter Michelle Glynn. During his retirement he was active in the El Zaribah Shriner organization; serving his community and driving his custom made cars in parades all over Arizona to raise awareness and money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. His love of woodworking meant that he spent countless hours in his workshop; creating beautiful gifts for family and friends.
Len was an amazing husband, father, grandfather to Jennifer Glynn and great-grandfather to Elizabeth Vollmert. He touched the lives of all the people he encountered and never met a stranger. He will be dearly missed but his family takes comfort that he is now at peace surrounded by light and those loved ones who preceded him in death.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Highgate Senior Living who lovingly assisted our father these past months. We will celebrate his life and service to our country at a graveside service on December 30, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Phoenix Memorial Cemetery.
