Joan "Eddie" Robertson Fugate

Joan “Eddie” Robertson Fugate passed away peacefully on December 17, 2022 at Ryan House in Phoenix, Arizona. She lived just a few days into her 92nd year, being born on December 13, 1930 in Clinton, Indiana. She was the third of three children born to the family of Robert and Vera Robertson that have now all passed on to heavenly realms.

Her older brother John “Jack” Robertson and older sister Florence Jean Robertson Foltz both took turns in raising her following her father’s death in 1938. With a single working mom, Joan’s older sister Jean took on most of the responsibility for raising and looking after her. In Clinton, Joan was often referred to as Jean’s little girl. The bond between these sisters lasted their whole lifetime, with many calls a day to check in with each other as they lived in different parts of the country.

Joan married Edward Boyd Fugate in 1958, in Danville Illinois. They met while both were working at the VA hospital. In 1959, Joan and Edward moved their family to Arizona, where Joan’s mother had moved a few years prior. In Phoenix they purchased a home that Joan resided in for more than 60 years, and in which they raised two children, Shelley and Richard.

Joan leaves behind her two children and their spouses, Shelley and Allen, Richard and Lu. A niece, Randy, and a nephew, Scott. Two grandchildren, Arron and Amy, and a grandchild-in-law, Brendan. She will be missed by family and friends. Her family would like to express gratitude and appreciation for all the caregivers, particularly Linda Reeves, that assisted Joan in her final years.

In lieu of a traditional memorial service, a grave side service will be held at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery where she will be interred at last with Edward.
