Gary Lee Mitchell was born in Phoenix, Arizona on August 11, 1945 to Harvey Lee Mitchell and Jewel Dean Mitchell. Gary married his wife Tommie L. Parker Mitchell on June 7, 1991. They were married for thirty four years.
Gary was sometimes known as "Fuzz" by family and friends. During Gary's younger years at Bethune Elementary School, he was the marbles champion for three years. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1963. During his high school years he was a basketball star. After graduating from PUHS, Gary attended Phoenix College for one year before he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War.
While serving two years in Vietnam, Gary earned the Purple Heart award for wounds received in combat. Gary also received the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in ground combat during 1967 while in Vietnam.
After returning home to Phoenix, Gary started working for the Glendale Post Office. He worked as a mail carrier for thirty years. After he retired, he worked at News Channel 10 and drove a City of Phoenix bus for a short time. Gary also delivered meals to the elderly for the City of Phoenix for 2 years.
To cherish his memory Gary leaves three sisters; Betty Mitchell of Phoenix, AZ, Rose Ward(Gerald) of Phoenix, AZ, Bernadette Johnson(Gregory) of Phoenix, AZ.
Gary has three sons and one stepson; Marc Mitchell(Deborah) of Phoenix, AZ, Kajuan Mitchell(Corine) of Phoenix, AZ, Gary Huggins(Bernice)Sunset 9-23-2019. Stepson Trent L. Baucum.
Gary has a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins to cherish his life.
