Esther Kayee Ong, age 83, passed away in Gilbert, Arizona. She is survived by 8 nephews and nieces, 9 grandnephews and grandnieces and 3 great grandchildren in New York, Toronto, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Esther lived a rich life that traversed Asia and North America. Growing up in Hong Kong, Esther attended the prestigious Chinese Chung Chi University and earned a degree in Chemistry amongst a predominant male student population. She taught Mathematics and Science as a High School teacher in Hong Kong for several years and then immigrated to Phoenix, Arizona as a single young woman. Esther worked in the Chinese restaurant industry, moving up to the rank of manager and eventually partners of two successful restaurants in Phoenix. Esther loved Sports, and was an ardent fan of the Phoenix Suns. She herself became adept in deep sea fishing and often partook in fishing trips in Mexico.
Throughout her life, Esther had proved to be a role model for her family and friends, not only for her sharp wits and strong work ethics, but also her resilience and resourcefulness in times of setbacks. Forced to retire in her late 40s due to severe heart illnesses, Esther modified her lifestyle and managed to stay active with friends and families as well as volunteering in the Asian American community in Phoenix, AZ. She continued to travel extensively and lived independently until the last three years when she moved into an assisted living facility. She remained active in her new community despite her failing health, and won the affections of the staff and her neighbors.
Esther had been the “glue” of our families. She was our surrogate mother, sister, and fun-loving friend. We will miss her unwavering support and love for us.
