Delbert Gene Mundy

Delbert Gene Mundy 'Gene', 93, passed away in his Phoenix home on Tuesday May 22, 2024. His daughter Mary was with him. Gene was born in Decatur, IL on January 14,1931 to Delbert Raymond Mundy and Ester Marie Bergbower Mundy. He attended St. Teresa grade school and high school. Gene served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict as an aircraft mechanic. He was stationed in Las Vegas and Luke Air Force base in Arizona. He fell in love with Arizona and had a dream to move there one day. After being discharged from the Air Force he met his future wife, Erma Jean Helfer, on a blind date. The date was set up by his brother Charlie's then girlfriend and soon to be wife, Donna, as the two ladies worked together. The date was a success and eventually Gene and Erma wed. After a few years in IL, Gene moved his family to Phoenix, AZ in August, 1959 with Erma 7 months pregnant with their third child, Will. Gene first worked as a mechanic at a gas station, then got a job working for John F. Long, a big developer. First he worked as a mechanic, then as a property manager, later got his real estate license and sold homes for John F. Long. Eventually he became a real estate appraiser which became his career until retirement. In retirement he took up reading western novels, baking bread, and cooking. Gene and Erma also traveled taking many wonderful trips including a cruise to Alaska. They were on their way home when the 9/11 attack happened and all planes were grounded for several days but eventually they got home safely. Gene was an avid golfer all his adult life. He had his circle of men friends that he golfed with several times a week. He was always on the hunt for the perfect putter and driver.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Erma, who he lovingly cared for until she passed away in 2019. He is survived by his children, Mary Mundy, Jean-Anne Knebelsberger (Dave) and Will Mundy (Tina), 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He will be missed in the family circle but we know he has gone to his reward in heaven.

A rosary for Delbert will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at St Gregory Catholic Parish Phoenix, 3424 N 18th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85015. A funeral mass will occur Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 3424 N 18th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85015. A reception will occur Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries, 710 West Bethany Home Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013.
