Arlene Sutherland Murphy was born on August 25, 1935, in Evanston, Illinois, to Margaret Mayher and Arthur Sutherland. She married George Francis Murphy Jr. on May 29, 1954, in Columbus, Georgia, and passed away on July 14, 2024, at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama.
Arlene's love for her family was boundless. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Frances Morse (Gary); three sons, Michael Francis (Marie), Thomas Scurry (Susan), and Timothy Sean (Angela); Daughter-in-Law Deborah Jean Murphy (Bryan); four grandchildren, Jennifer Marie McInnis (Dan), Kathryn Elizabeth Marek (Paul), Brendan Shea Murphy, and Timothy Sean Teen Murphy; and six great-grandchildren.
She was much loved by those who predeceased her, including her husband, George Francis Murphy, her son, Bryan Arthur Murphy, and grandsons John Patrick Murphy and James Michael Murphy.
Arlene was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and a passionate quilter, artist, and craftsperson. She delighted in playing Mahjong, having lunch with the “ladies,” and celebrating life as an enthusiastic Florida State football fan. She was also a lifelong member of The Order of the Daughters of the King (DOK) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
We invite you to celebrate Arlene's life with us at a memorial service on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 Church Drive, Auburn, Alabama. The Reverend Mike Harber will preside, and a reception will follow in the Parish Commons. Happy, colorful, cheerful clothes and attire are encouraged as we celebrate Arlene’s love for life.
