Patricia Ann Ellis Mustoe (known as Ms. Pat), resident and a pillar of service in Austin, TX, passed away in the early hours of March 27, 2024, at the age of 79. Surrounded by her loving children in her home, Pat's final moments reflected a life dedicated to faith in God, sharing the love of Jesus Christ, and serving her community.
Born on April 10, 1944, in Luray, Virginia, Pat was the daughter of Robert F. Ellis and Rachel H. Ellis. After graduating from Luray High School in 1962, she went on to earn a degree from Radford University in 1966. A basketball star in high school with big dreams of coaching after college, Pat set aside those aspirations after spending a summer in Austin, TX where she answered a call to serve the East Austin community.
Pat's calling became her life's work. She served for 55 years as the director of the Baptist Community Center, tirelessly helping others. In 2022, the community center was renamed in her honor to the Pat Mustoe Baptist Community Center.
Pat's faith and dedication extended beyond the community center. A devoted and active member of Baptist Temple church for 58 years, she cherished her church family, taught Sunday school, led ladies’ groups, and actively participated in church administration. In recognition of her love, a prayer room at Baptist Temple church was dedicated in her name in 2023.
Pat leaves behind a legacy of love and service. She is survived by her children, Anthony Mustoe (wife Debra) of Keller, TX, and Catherine Mustoe (husband Lupe Perez III) of Austin, TX. Her grandchildren, Noah and Grayson Mustoe, brought her immense joy as the children of Anthony and Debra. Pat is also survived by her former husband, Edward Mustoe of Pflugerville, TX.
Pat’s surviving family includes her aunt, Betty Canady of Jacksonville, NC, her nephew Richard Flanagan (wife Maija) of Jamaica Plains, MA and their children, and her niece Margaret (Margie) Obenschain (husband Walter) of Staunton, VA and their children. Pat is predeceased by her dear sister, Doris Jean Flanagan, who bestowed upon her the name Patricia.
Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" was Pat’s guiding verse. Her boundless energy, warm sense of humor, and selflessness were a testament to her life of service.
Pat's dedication received remarkable recognition. In 1996, she was commissioned as an honorary Texan by then-Governor George W. Bush, who later became President of the United States. Also in 1996, Austin Mayor Bruce Todd declared September 6th as "Pat Mustoe Day" in honor of her exceptional contributions to the city, particularly the East Austin community. Thousands across generations found hope and support through her work. The Pat Mustoe Baptist Community Center, supported by wonderful local Baptist churches and many volunteers, became a haven, offering assistance, acceptance, and love through a range of programs. In 2016, a beautiful celebration marked Pat’s 50 years of service, held at The First Baptist Church of Austin. We are comforted knowing Pat will hear the words found in Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant."
