Odeen Hibbs passed away peacefully on March 7, 2018. He lived an incredible life and is now with the Lord. Growing up in the county around Elgin, Odeen found peace and solace in the country, raising cattle in the area throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his dad, Jessie Hibbs and mother Effie Mae, his son Terry Hibbs and siblings Sherman, Dixie McDaniel, Harvey and Mervin Hibbs.
Odeen was 80 years old and leaves behind his wife Sandra Hibbs, son Rodney Hibbs of Elgin, step daughter Annie Manassero and husband Dan of California, grandson Austin Hibbs and fiancé Celia Jane Edwards of Elgin, and granddaughter Heidi Griffin and fiancé Matt Milliken of Jarrell.
Known as an astute businessman, Odeen first began work with Texas Crushed Stone in the 60’s at their Scale House Balcones Quarry, and then moved into sales at their Georgetown location, where he was one of their top salesman. Businesses he ran successfully included Odeen Hibbs Trucking Co. from 1974 toll 2011, and Austin Crushed Stone Co. growing one of the largest trucking companies in Texas. In addition, he also created Trojan Transport Co. Inc., a company which transported liquid asphalt. He was one of the main innovators in transforming the trucking industry in the late 1980’s.
He was a founder and charter member of the Austin Livestock Show; longtime supporter and member of the University of Texas Longhorn Club; Southwest Cattlemen’s Assoc.; Texas Motor Transportation Association (TMTA); and a Director of Liberty Bank.
He believed in helping others in the industry and served as mentor and friend to many. His gifts went beyond just trucking down the highway. At one time, he transported water tankers to water the Austin Icon’s Treaty Oak Tree that had been poisoned. Odeen went above and beyond to make sure that tree had the water it needed.
