Katherine J. Shepherd was born November 5, 1931 in Ledbetter, Texas to the late William and Esther Mae Jackson. She was the only daughter and the oldest of five children. She graduated from Incarnate Word University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and worked at Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Ms. Katherine, as she was often referred to as; loved serving her community and worked as a registered nurse (RN) most of her professional career. She later remarried and moved to Austin, Texas in 1985 in which she worked as a RN in Postpartum/Women’s Health at Seton Hospital until she retired from St. David’s Hospital in 2003. Ms. Katherine also proudly served as one of the mothers of the church, a mission sister (dutiful treasurer), an usher, and a senior choir member at Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Emeritus Clark and Rev. Dr. Daryl L. Horton until God called her home on February 6, 2022.
She is preceded in death by her parents; William Jackson and Ester Mae Jackson, her son; Garrett Lewis, her two brothers; William Jackson Jr and Ray Gene Jackson, and a son-in-law; Harold Lara.
She leaves to mourn her transition, four children; Brenda Herring (Harlan) of San Antonio, TX, Sandra DeNese Lara of Austin, TX, Michael Shepherd of San Antonio, TX, and Kathy Collins (David) of Pflugerville, TX., seven grandchildren; Garrett Lewis Jr of Breaux Bridge, LA, Toshia Williams (Alvin) of Leander, TX, Tashina Gary of San Antonio, TX, Garrett Shepherd (Keari) of Katy, TX, Gabriel Shepherd of Austin, TX, Marnique Neille and Katherine Neille of Pflugerville, TX, eight bonus grandchildren; Kadesia, Harlan Jr, Hermeka, Yvette, Jairus, Angel, Garrett A. (Joslyn), and Jordan, two brothers; Andrew Jackson and Ronnie Jackson (Nina), two loving aunts; Daisy Roscoe and Mardrid Fillmore, and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and a very dear friend, Ms. Alberta Grady.
The visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North IH35, Pflugerville, TX 78660. Home-Going Celebration will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2938 E. 13th Street, Austin, TX, 78702.
