Joseph Michael Greer (Mike) was born in Sioux City, Iowa on January 6, 1946, and passed away on June 8, 2022, in Round Rock, Texas. He married Judith Marie Greer (Jude) on August 3, 1974, and they were married for nearly 48 years. Mike and Judy were blessed with two children, Laura Greer Thompson and John Michael Greer. Their blessings continued as their family expanded to include their daughter-in-law, Debra Greer, their miracle grandbaby, Madison Amelia Greer, and son-in-law Dustin Thompson.
Mike was raised in the small town of Tyndall, South Dakota from the first grade through high school. He learned many life lessons from the good people of Tyndall, including Father Cronin, the priest at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Father Cronin taught Mike about the Catholic faith, and Mike served as an alter boy from 2nd grade until he graduated high school. The tenants of Mike’s faith were reinforced at home by his parents Vincent Joseph Greer and Mary Greer.
After graduating from Tyndall High School, Mike attended and graduated from the University of Iowa. He furthered his education by attending law school there. Rather than be drafted to Vietnam, he joined the Air Force after one semester of law school. He served in Vietnam as an air traffic controller and rose to the rank of captain before his honorable discharge. Mike was proud of his service and would be seen putting his son, John, on his shoulders and having small family parades around the house on various holidays, in addition to proudly flying the U.S. flag at his home.
After his discharge from the Air Force, Mike was hired by Shell Oil Company. He worked for Shell for 32 years in a variety of different fields and retired in 2004 as a General Manager. During his career with Shell, Mike and his family lived throughout the United States, including Cincinnati and Cleveland, Ohio, Spring and Kingwood, Texas, Edwardsville and Naperville, Illinois, and San Ramon and Mission Viejo, California. Mike and Judy retired to Round Rock, Texas to be closer to their children.
Mike and Judy loved traveling and were able to visit all 50 states. Their love continued to grow with each year of marriage. Mike always said that the best thing God ever did for him was to give him Judy.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Vincent Joseph and Mary E. Greer, his older sister, Kathryn Mary Pohlman, his younger brother John Stephen Greer, and his son-in-law Dustin Thompson. He is survived by his beautiful wife Judy, his children Laura and John, his daughter-in-law Debra, his miracle granddaughter Madison Amelia, his younger sister Sarah Greer Bush, along with countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
