He was a loving husband, son, brother, father, step-father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin and friend. He was a family man who took care of his family and was loving and selfless. Joe was an avid fisherman and enjoyed golfing as well. While Joe will be dearly missed, we find comfort in the depth and authenticity of his faith and the promise of his eternal life. Joe was born to Ramon and Petra Garcia, and was later blessed with 9 loving sisters that he was super protective of. He was born and raised in Austin, Texas. Joe cherished his family and took impeccable care of his mother and little sisters. Joe was a member of the National Guard. In 1962, he was placed on active duty in the United States Army during the Cuban Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Joe started a career as a machinist from 1966 - 1971. Then in 1971 he started working for Southern Pacific Railroad. Joe met and married Jackie Closs on June 8th, 1984. With Joe's son's and Jackie's children, their combined family produced a large clan. Joe retired from The Southern Pacific Railroad in 1994. While he accomplished much outside of the home, his family came first and benefited from his boundless love and support. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the collective joy of his life and his favorite chapter of all was his role as their "Grandpa".
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Petra Garcia, his sister and brother-in-law Emma and Tim Ontiveros, his beloved son, Eddie Garcia, his brother-in-law Alex Mendoza, his great-niece, Amanda Torres, and his nephews, Tony Garcia Jr. and Frank Garcia, and his step-grandson Larry Irvin.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Jackie Garcia, son's Joe Garcia Jr. and James Garcia, step-daughters Teresa Closs, Jana Closs, and Carla and Boe Lobdell, step-son Steve Closs, his 8 loving sisters and spouses, Jacinta and Tony Garcia Sr., Lupe Garcia and Elle Cadiz, Sylvia Mendoza, Frances and Dan Pena, Irene Garcia, Janie Acosta and Arthur Hernandez, Ysabel and Victor Murrieta and Olivia and Arthur Pachicano, Joe had 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and loved and adored each and everyone of them. Joe is also survived by a large number of cousins, nieces and nephews whom he was very close to.
Joe's sense of humor and signature laugh will be missed, however we are proud of the meaningful life he led and the loving example he provided for us all. Thank you for your outpouring of love and support.
A visitation for Joe will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas. A prayer service will occur Tuesday, June 11, 2024 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 2:00 p.m., 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas.
