James Ray Collins was born in Snyder, TX and raised in Austin, TX where he attended local public schools. He graduated from Austin High School, Class of 1976. James was a hard worker and saved money to buy a prized car (Chrysler Cordoba) from the showroom floor at the dealership. He had a passion for food (cooking and eating) and decided to pursue a career as a chef.
In 1981, a childhood friend invited James to visit San Jose, CA. James loved the Bay Area so much that he decided to make the area home. He applied for a job as a chef at San Jose State University (SJSU). They were impressed by his work ethic, experience, and interview and James was hired the same day. He worked at SJSU over 26 years and was recognized as a talented chef throughout his career. He rarely missed work and preferred short vacations not to interfere with work. After spending almost 40 years in California, James relocated back to the Austin area in 2018, closer to family and friends.
In his free time, James enjoyed cooking, fishing, music, cruising and traveling (especially to Hawaii). He loved spending time with his children Chris and Jakisha and grandchildren Alicia and Jayla. James was loved dearly by his parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
