Preceding him in death was his first wife of 62 years, Lois Bird Cooper; daughter, Tammy Bird Fariss; daughter-in-law Sherry Lynne Cooper; step-daughter Debbie Gillian; grandson Jason Brian Cooper. Parents and seven brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Red served in the Navy during World War II at the Naval Supply Depot in Hollandia, New Guinea. He worked for 40 years for Kerrville Bus Company, driving over 5 million miles without a ticket or an accident. Prior to joining Kerrville Bus Company, Red had various other jobs such as logger, carpenter, ice man and cab dispatcher. While driving, he also held jobs such as bail bondsman, vending machine operator, served as a boy scout leader and a girl scout leader (at the same time), was a member of the Travis County Sheriff Posse Mounted Drill Team, was an original member of the Travis County Rescue Unit and volunteered many years at Pioneer Farms.
Red is survived by his wife of 12 years, Joan Bryson Cooper; two sons, James L. Cooper and wife, Ellen and Terry E. Cooper and wife, Cheryl; son-in-law Don Fariss; stepson David Gillian, wife Sarah and children Jacob and Rebecca; and stepdaughter Dava Maher and fiance John Stahl. He is also survived by grandsons Brent Fariss, wife Cathy and children Vincent and Olivia of Austin; by James Cooper, wife Cristy and sons Kyle and Quinn of Las Vegas, Nevada; by Warren Cooper, wife Kelley and sons Ryan, Matthew and Connor of Austin; by Chris Cooper, wife Melanie and daughter Danica of Corinth, Texas; by Kelly Huck of Leander; and by Cory Huck, wife Valerie Huck and children Faith, Dalton and Kayti of Leander; and by granddaughters, Christy Manners, husband Joel and sons Gabriel and Sean of Austin; by Laura Lauck and husband Bob and children Max and Samantha DeLine and Carter and Cameron Lauck of Austin; and by Jennifer Fonken, husband Eric and children Emily, Cara and Will of Austin.
Red and Lois were very active with the Austin Square and Round Dance Association and attended over 22 National Square Dance Conventions and numerous state and regional conventions and dances during the three decades he was active in square dancing. After he and Joan married, they continued traveling around the country to various state and regional conventions.
His grandsons will honor him as pallbearers.
