On November 6, 2022, heaven got a new angel. Please note that heaven will be whipped into shape by the time that we join her and what a celebration that will be. Esther "Tere" Mayo Cuellar had just celebrated her 94th birthday last month (October 7th). Due to Alzheimer's disease, she had a been residing at Tech Ridge Oaks Memory Care Center for the past two years.
Esther Mayo Cuellar was the second oldest daughter of Augustin and Matiana Cuellar (both deceased). She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister, Juvencio Cuellar, Augustine "Tino" Mayo Cuellar and Amalia "Mollie" Cuellar Zamora. She is survived by her brother, Mayo Cuellar (Anita) and remaining sisters, Guadalupe "Lupe" Cuellar Reyna, Mary Helen "Nena" Cuellar Quintero (Manuel), and Margaret "Margie" Cuellar. Her family and multitude of cousins called her Tere. To her many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great grandnephews, great grandnieces, great-great grandnephews and great-great grandnieces, she was Tia Tere.
Esther loved family gatherings the most, so she loved the holidays, and family coming together was a reason to celebrate with a meal. She was constantly on the phone and knew information on everyone in or related to the Mayo and Cuellar family - all before the advent of cell phones, the internet/Facebook or geneology. As soon as she heard a family member was coming to town, she would make a celebration meal. Nobody could make cornbread dressing like hers on Thanksgiving. There was always tamals, rice and beans for Christmas Eve. Then, there would be menudo on New Year's Eve with bunuelos, along with the makings for sandwiches and nachos for anyone who refused to eat menudo. She loved traveling. There were so many road trips - visiting all the missions of Texas and going to the beaches of Galveston and Corpus Christi. There was repeated traveling to Lockhart (for barbecue at Kreuz [both the original and present locations] and visiting with family) and San Antonio. She took multiple Caribbean cruises to Mexico. There were numerous bus trips to the Rio Grande Valley, but also to Monterrey and Canada. She dearly loved the Texas Tornados, so there was always a tape/CD of their music for road trips. She spoke her mind, and would make hilarious, but accurate, observations, because she was the one who would say what everyone was really thinking. She loved to eat Kreuz's barbecue with a real Coke, followed by a scoop of strawberry ice cream. She loved to eat at Luby's because they served liver and onions. She loved anything with strawberries - ice cream, cupcakes, cake, etc. We pray that she knew how deeply she was appreciated and loved by us privileged few who had the joy of truly knowing and loving her.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com for the Cuellar family.
