Born in East Detroit, Michigan, on September 26, 1934, of parents Samuel and Lydia Roth, Dorothy attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, and later served for several years as a first grade teacher at Redeemer Lutheran School in San Antonio, Texas. First and foremost, she dedicated her life to her family as a faithful wife, loving mother, gracious mother-in-law, beloved “Granny,” and great-grandma “Gigi.” She graced her family and others not only with unconditional love and the sacrificial work of her hands, but also with quiet yet strong wisdom and her gentle yet influential presence, leading by example in how she lived out her unwavering faith in God. She will be deeply missed, but her light shines in her descendants as a legacy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Jim Menke, brother Sam Roth, and sister Kay Grefrath. She is survived by her five children, including sons Jim, Jr. (Karen), Steve, Tom (Becky), Ken (Marcy), and daughter Janis Leal (Roland), as well as 22 grandchildren and 5 (6) great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1513 E. Yager Lane, Austin, Texas, 78753, on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
