William Albert Akers, 85, of Peoria, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Serenity Assisted Living in East Peoria. He was born on October 28, 1939, in Peoria, to Francis and Evelyn (Kohl) Akers. Bill was the fourth eldest of nine children.
On January 11, 1964, he married Carol Ann Brady at Camp Pendleton, California, while he was serving in the United States Marine Corps. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank, and his sister Francis.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Carol; their two sons, William (Jacqueline) Akers II and Troy Akers; three sisters, Carole Stephens, Peg Callahan, and Marti (Larry) Coates; three brothers, Ed (Lynn) Akers, Tom (Lynn) Akers, and Bob (Mary) Akers. Bill was also a proud grandfather to Haley (Scott Anderson) Akers, Billy (Aurora) Akers, John Akers, Andrew Akers; a great-grandchild, Finley Anderson, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Bill served from 1960 to 1964. He went on to work for the City of Peoria Fire Department, retiring in 1990 as an engineer. He also worked as a sheet metal worker at Kreiling Roofing, retiring in 1995. Bill was a devoted member of the Peoria IAFF Local 544/50 and Sheet Metal Local #1.
Bill and Carol were known for their strong, loving marriage—a bond admired by all who knew them. Together, they traveled often, spending many winters in Daytona Beach, Florida, and enjoyed their favorite local spots like Rubes Tap. They were also active members of several fraternal organizations, including the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and Eagles.
Bill was well-loved by his family and friends, known as a south end legend in Peoria. His loyalty, kindness, and generosity made him an endearing figure to many. He was a tough man with a sweet and gentle heart, who worked hard to provide for his family. Bill was an avid fan of classic cars, especially Cadillacs and muscle cars, classic country music, golf, the Chicago Cubs, and horse racing. He was also deeply involved in his sons' lives, supporting them in their sports and mentoring them throughout their years.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Serenity Assisted Living for their care and kindness during Bill’s final days.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, December 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Davison Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria.
