He was born June 3, 1932 in Vermont, IL to Edward and Sarah (Bohannon) Platt. They preceded him in death. He married Betty Bair March 3, 1957 in Vermont, IL. She survives
Also surviving are their two children, Michael E. (Genia) Platt of West Peoria and Janet (William) Frietsch of Elmwood, six grandchildren Brandon, Katie and Trent Platt, Ashley (Jordan) Solberg, Abby and Ally Frietsch and three great-grandchildren, McKenna, Evelyn and Jace Solberg.
Russ served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and worked as a Maintenance Engineer with Illinois Mutual for 35 years before retiring. He was an avid Cardinal Baseball fan and loved attending his grandchildren's events. Russ enjoyed fishing in Canada and playing cards with his friends. He was a Past-President and Treasurer for Independent Sports Club, a member of the Elks Lodge # 20, Masonic Blue Lodge, Shriner's, Greater Peoria Shriner's Club and T &T Club. Russ was a recipient of the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame Neve Harms Award in 2007.
A visitation will be Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 2 to 4 pm at Davison-Fulton-Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 am, Monday, January 29, 2017 with visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
