She was born on July 9, 1943 in Pekin to Russell and Lauretta (Smith) Johnson. Melinda married Dale Thomas on August 10, 1975 in Pekin, he survives.
Melinda is also survived by her daughter, Dawn (Wayne) Topping; grandchildren, Griffin and Chloe; brother, Orrin (Carolyn) Johnson and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Melinda worked a variety of interesting jobs. She and Dale owned a Tuxedo rental/bridal shop where Melinda baked and decorated wedding cakes. They then owned a Dunkin Donuts where she baked many donuts.
Later on, she worked in the grain business and ultimately retired from OSF Family Practice.
Melinda was known for her culinary talents, especially her delicious baked cakes that brought joy to family gatherings and celebrations. She especially liked cooking holiday meals and cooking meals and cookies/cakes for the grandchildren.
Melinda found comfort in reading her favorite books, some were cookbooks and James Patterson.
Her love for travel took her to beautiful Destin, Florida, where she cherished moments spent by the ocean, creating lasting memories with her family.
Above all, Melinda was a devoted grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them, sharing her passions and showering them with love and wisdom.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 1, 2024 at Peoria Apostolic Christian Church, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery, Edwards.
