His parents were Lorraine and Tom Hensley, Jr. He was raised in Peoria, Illinois and graduated from Peoria Richwoods High School in 1965. While he was in Junior High School, his parents purchased the Stony Knob Cottages in Estes Park, Colorado so he would spend most of his summers helping run Stony Knob. After graduating from High School, enrolled in Arapahoe Community College in Littleton and received a BS in Business from University of Denver. He later received an MBA from Arizona State University.
John started his career working in the banking industry in California and later in Phoenix. He retired from Wells Fargo as a Vice President in 2021 after working for Wells Fargo for 42 years. He had a very successful career and was an excellent investor and really understood the stock market.
John was very proud of his grandfather, Carl Gustafson who was the Assistant Chief Engineer of Caterpillar, Inc. He held several patents for machinery he designed. That is what grew John’s love for Caterpillar. He was also proud of his grandfather, Tom Hensley, Sr. who was a renowned dentist in Peoria, Illinois.
John also had a passion for collecting model trains. That passion was obtained when he was a small boy and Grandfather Gustafson would come to his house to work on model train layouts with him and his dad. That passion was later rekindled with his nephew, Scott and the two of them would spend many hours working on new model train layouts. John also enjoyed his annual trips back to Colorado to visit Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Hensley; his father, Tom Hensley, Jr. and his sister, Janet McDonald.
He is survived by his brother-in-Law, Robert McDonald; and nephews, Robert (Anna) McDonald, Scott McDonald and Kevin (Jennifer) McDonald all of Fort Collins, Colorado.
