He graduated Manual Training High School Feb 1942. Worked at Hiram Walker Distillery. Inducted into the United States Army, Feb. 1943. Served three years with 21st AAA HQ Battery attached 9th Air Force. He served E.T.O. England, Normondy, North France, Rhineland, Central Europe. Harold was Honorably discharged Dec. 21, 1945 as a Staff Sergeant.
He married Eleanora Jean “Cook” Kissner January 5, 1946. She Survies.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by two sons; Steven Louis Nelson and Lanny Reed Nelson.
In 1946 he worked at Pabst Brewery where he was a Foreman in Shipping and Receiving.
Later Harold joined the Peoria Fire Department in April 1956 and served 26 ½ years retiring September 1982 as Assistant Fire Chief.
He was a licensed pilot, a certified scuba diver, a parachutist, a back packer, avid hiker and avid reader. His favorite acronym was GOYAASMA “Get off your ass and start moving around.”
Services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. Visitation will be from 12 – 2 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
