She was born on October 6, 1931, in Rockford, IL to John and Walborg Broo. Betty married Robert McKay on May 12, 1951 in Rockford. He preceded her in death in May of 2006.

She is survived by her daughters, Julie (the late Alan) McKay-Ebert, and Susan (Randy) Neff, both of Peoria.
Betty was a graduate of Rockford East High School.
Betty was very active in her community. Bob and Betty ran their own business, Craft Cove for 22 years. She spent much of her time volunteering and working in various organizations. That includes Entree Nous, a group in the 70's welcoming new people into the town, volunteering at Northmoor Grade School, where she later started working in the lunchroom, volunteering with OSF Hospice for many decades, and even doing office work for them. She often knitted teddy bears for the children in hospitals. Betty was a long time volunteer for the Salvation Army participating in a wide variety of services.
Betty was a proud, dedicated member of her church, Grace Presbyterian. She played a vital role in organizing and sustaining the Widows Group and His Alone for many years. She was on the prayer chain, calling members to let them know of new prayer requests. She had a host of friends in the church who she cared for dearly.
She had a great love of birds. She always made sure to have bird seed, and was very knowledgeable on the birds that she fed, and the different varieties and species.
Betty embraced her Swedish heritage, and was a proud Cubs fan.
