He was born on August 5, 1931 in Boise, Idaho, and lived in Reno, Nevada, during his youth. He attended college in California at Placer Junior College in Auburn, and at Fresno State College in Fresno. In November 1952 he began basic flight training in Pensacola, Florida, flying the SNJ Texan and then to advanced training in Kingsville, Texas, flying the WWII TMB Avenger. He received his wings of gold in Pensacola on June 30, 1954.
He served as an aviator in a variety of squadrons, flying 15 different models of both propeller and jet aircraft until 1969, compiling a total of 6,050 accident free flight hours, until impaired vision halted his flying career. He retired from active duty on April 30, 1973, to pursue a career in real estate and security investments.
His most memorable military time included 6 and a half years as a flight instructor at NAS Saufley and Whiting Field in Florida as well as NAS Kingsville and NAS Chase Field in Texas, where he mentored student pilots in many phases of training from primary flight through advanced training in both propeller and jet driven aircraft.
LCDR Neuenswander is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Anna Louise; and his brother, Alfred Charles.
He is survived by the love of his life, Anna Vincenza Taylor; his son, Paul Neuenswander; daughter, Karen Brock (Steve); two grandchildren, Caitlin Brock and Sean Brock; two nieces, Cynthia Zakrevsky and Kelly Thieme; and his two adoptive daughters, Anna Maria Robertson and Laura Lynn Murphy.
A visitation for Roy will be held Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel, 3351 Scenic Highway 90e, Pensacola, FL 32503, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
