Michelle Marie Huggins known affectionately as “Misha” to her many friends, passed away on Sept 5th 2023 after a lengthy illness. Born on Dec 1, 1959, she was the daughter of Gladys and Ira B Huggins. Michelle’s vibrant spirit and zest for life touched all who knew her.
Michelle’s life was a testament to her love for a good party, rock and roll, adventure and the outdoors. She spent 2 years working as a cook and 1st mate on a sailboat in the Islands where she made many lifelong friends. She also had a passion for sailboat racing and enjoyed the competitive but friendly comradery on Pensacola Bay. You could say she definitely “got the t-shirt!”.
Beyond her love for the sea, Michelle also had a love for all things warm and furry. She had a deep spiritual connection with horses and spent her early years at the stables and in the woods attending Pow Wow’s whenever possible. Michelle volunteered at animal shelters as well – her kind and loving nature made her a beloved caregiver to many animals in need. She had a special fondness for blue eyed huskies and her loyal companions brought her immeasurable happiness throughout her life. She loved this saying by A.D. Williams: “ When I look into the eyes of an animal, I do not see an animal, I see a living being, I see a friend. I feel a soul.”
A true wanderer at heart, Michelle had a passion for exploring new places and embracing new cultures. Her love for life was complemented by her love for music. Her voice was beautiful and as a young adult she could often be found somehow backstage or even onstage at many a rock concert – occasionally singing backup! Her collection of ticket stubs and autographed t-shirts, CD’s and Albums is impressive.
Michelle Marie Huggins was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys, her father , Ira, her sister Lisa and her brother Scott as well as her beloved huskies Bandit, Nikita and Jazzy. She leaves behind a nephew Raymond “ Matt” Matheny and many friends including Kim Kaminski and Lee Newkirk.
Services at sea for Michelle will be held privately, but a celebration of her life will be held in the near future and will be announced via Facebook. In memory of Michelle “ Misha” Huggins - please send your donation in her name to the Escambia County Animal Shelter, or the Santa Rosa Animal Shelter.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 29th, 2023 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at the Pensacola Yacht Club Watson Sailing Center with music, light horderves, and a bar. Please join us in remember and honoring the life of Michelle.
