Larry grew up in Huntersland, New York, and graduated from Middleburgh High School in 1962. He enlisted in the Navy on September 4, 1963, and quickly rose through the ranks to Chief Petty Officer. He participated in the Navy’s Advanced Degree Completion Program and obtained his Associate’s Degree from Pensacola Junior College in 1973. He subsequently completed his Bachelor’s Degree from Troy State University. He was selected for the Navy’s Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Program and promoted to CWO2 on April 1, 1978.
Larry served as a cryptologist with duty stations throughout the world, including Imperial Beach, California; Bremerhaven, Germany; Pensacola, Florida; Misawa, Japan; Winter Harbor, Maine and Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico. He served a grateful nation for 27 dedicated and distinguished years in the United States Navy, retiring as a CWO4 on January 31,1990.
After retiring from the Navy, Larry worked for several years as a consultant for various government organizations. In retirement, he remained active and loved hunting, fishing and sports. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh. Larry loved to cook feasts and host large gatherings of friends and family. He was a loyal, lifelong friend to many who cherished his companionship.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Porter and his brothers, Ray, Albert and Gene. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 53 years, Pam; his two sons, Aric (Tracy) and Chris (Sena); two grandchildren, Jessica Hanson (Chad) and Michael Porter; his five great-granddaughters, Laiha, Addie, Paisley, Henley and Piper Hanson; his twin sister, Linda McDermott (Donnie); his sister Janis Puchala (John) and his brother Robert Porter (Rosemary).
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 10:00 am with Memorial Service at 10:30 am at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL. A Graveside Service will follow at 11:30 am at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Road, Pensacola, FL. Due to Naval Air Station Pensacola restrictions, the Graveside Service will be limited to immediate family only.
