Joan Ann King, our beloved Maw Maw, passed away May 2, 2022 at the age of 88.9 years. She was a long-term resident of Pensacola, Florida, but remained an unofficial citizen of her birthplace of Green Bay Wisconsin, where a majority of her family still resides. Joan was born June 3, 1933, to Raymond and Lucille Nuthals, the first-born of six children. She graduated from West High School, became head Hostess at Shoney’s Big Boy Restaurant, and met a handsome young Air Force man, Robert (Bob) King, who became her lifelong husband of 58 years.
Joan served as the Administrative Assistant to two Escambia County Supervisor’s of Elections, the Honorable Joe Oldmixon and the Honorable Bonnie Jones. She took great pride in drafting official correspondence for the Elections office, diplomatically handling the needs of various elected officials (including the Governor), and was present during the infamous “dangling chad” election of 2000. Joan not only served exceptionally in her professional realm, but was one of those “super moms” even more devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family was the pride of her life! She was an avid fan of both the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers, rarely missing a game. Joan was a long-time member of St. Mark UMC since 1971.
She was preceded in death by her mom and dad (Lucille & Raymond Nuthals) and her husband, Robert (Bob) King. She is survived by all of her siblings: brothers Jim (Mary) Nuthals, Tom (Linda) Nuthals, Bill (Debra) Nuthals, Bob (Marlene) Nuthals, and sister Cindy (Dave) Keyes; her children: Deborah (Jim) King, Peggy (Keith) Hodges, Patti (Mark) Warner, and Steven (Melissa) King; nine grandchildren: Taylor Wells, Scott (Shanna) Hodges, Darick Wells, Garett Wells, Erin (Justin) Stevens, Brian (Kara) Hodges, Shelbi (Jeff) Ames, Nicolette King, and Brannon King; and seven great grandchildren including Alexa, Allie, Everett, Haley, Eliza, Malia, and Ezra; and numerous precious nieces and nephews.
