Ivan was a native Pensacolian and grandson of Michael Murphy, Pensacola's first constable. He was the son of Ivan J and Kathleen Murphy Sweeney. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughters Suzanne Angstadt, Karen Sweeney, son Patrick (Ree) Sweeney , and brother Robert (Sue) Sweeney. He has 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife, Nita Atchinson of 59 years, two brothers Michael and Emory and a sister Blanche and grandson Daniel.
Ivan enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served in the Pacific during the war. He retired from the Navy after 23 years in 1963 and started his second career as a teacher. He taught Industrial Arts at Escambia High School for 20 years retiring in 1986. His hobby of woodworking in his home workshop resulted in many beautiful turnings which are treasured by family and friends. Ivan was a talented guitarist who started playing guitar at age 9 and worked with nationally known guitarist Lloyd Ellis. He played with many local musicians and bands throughout his life.
He will be lovingly remembered as a dedicated husband, father, Paw-Paw and friend.
On Monday December 28 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home visitation will begin at 9:00 AM with a service at 10:00 AM followed by burial at Barrancas National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
