Gregory P. Schuller, the son of James and Beverly (St John) Schuller, was born on November 21, 1956 in El Paso, TX. Greg grew up in West Bend, IA where he received his education, graduating from West Bend High School. He was united in marriage with Rebecca (Becky) McCartan on September 4, 1982.
Greg’s Naval career began in June of 1975, where he attended basic training in San Diego, CA from June - August 1975. Following basic training, he was assigned to the “Hospital Corpsman School,” also in San Diego from September - November 1975. Throughout his 20 years of dedicated military service, he was stationed at the following assignments: NAMI, Pensacola, FL (December 1975 – June 1976); VF-151 “The Vigilantes”, Yokosuka, Japan (July 1976 – August 1978); Branch Medical Clinic, South Weymouth, MA (September 1978 – August 1979); USS Inchon (LPH-12), Norfolk, VA (September 1979 – August 1982); Naval Hospital, Cherry Point, NC (September 1982 – June 1985); USS America (CV-66), Norfolk, VA (July 1985 – October 1988); HM14 “The Vanguard”, Norfolk, VA (November 1988 – June 1991); and NAMI, Pensacola, FL (July 1991 – June 1995) where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer in June 1995. Greg’s devotion to the US Navy continued after June of 1995, when he continued to show his love and appreciation for the military service through Inchon reunions, as well as re-engaging with NAMI in Pensacola, beginning in 2015. He was a proud father to a 4th generation military son, Matthew Schuller, who is currently serving in the United States Navy in Virginia Beach, VA.
After retiring from the United States Navy, he and his family moved to Humboldt, IA, where he worked in sales and construction. Greg’s devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren is second to none. Although a man of few words, his acts of kindness will never be forgotten. Greg had a witty response to conversation and shared comical stories or jokes all the time. If someone needed help, whether a simple answer to a question or creating a wooden masterpiece, he set time aside to provide the help. He would never do the entire project for you, he would always make sure to take advantage of a teachable moment. Any issue Greg encountered, he would tackle on a case by case basis, as to not disrupt the happiness of those close to his heart.
Survivors include his wife Rebecca (McCartan) of Pensacola, FL; Children: Elizabeth (Jared Sutherland) of Scottsdale, AZ; Jennifer (Levi Blair) of Peyton, CO; and Matthew of Virginia Beach, VA; Grandchildren: Merik and Pacen Blair; Father, James Schuller of Humboldt, IA; Siblings: Jeff Schuller of Whittemore, IA; B.J. (Julie) Schuller of Sibley, IA; and Janelle Lovejoy of Flagstaff, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
